Default Confused about species labels

Greetings:
Forty years ago I had a small collection of species paphs. Then life got in the way. Now that I am retired, I thought I might develop a small collection again. In looking at what is available for purchase I see something like the following:
-----
Paph species for sale:

Paph. species name (Super Yellow X Tall Boy) These names I made up.

-----

If they are selling a plant as a species, what does "Super Yellow X Tall Boy" mean? This does not seem to be a hybrid, and if so, is it a true species? If I want to collect "true species", what should I look for? I don't remember this forty years ago, or perhaps my mind is slipping.

In any case, I look forward to learning again about these marvelous plants.

Hello Richard welcome to the forum!

The example you gave is a species. The names (Super Yellow X Tall Boy) are the clonal names of the parent plants used in the breeding. Remember, species are always spelled with the lower case for example Paph lowii. Hybrids are always capitalized like Paph Julius.

Hope this helps you understand the terms.

Welcome to the site! As stated, species are lowercase. Also, anything with an "x" between two names indicates a hybrid. When in doubt, www.slipperorchids.info has all of the species listed.

Hi Richard welcome! I just wanted to chime in and say what others have already said. What species and hybrids are you collecting?
